The Bali Botanic Garden (Indonesian: Kebun Raya Bali) is Indonesia’s biggest botanic garden, located in the hilly region of Bedugul, Tabanan Regency, central Bali, approximately 90 minutes north of Denpasar. The Garden was founded on July 15, 1959, and is located roughly 1300 meters above sea level on the slopes of Tapak Hill, overlooking Bratan Lake and the Ulun Danu Temple. The Garden is a botanical research, conservation, teaching, and recreation center. The Indonesian Institute of Sciences runs it.

The Garden spans 157.5 hectares (389 acres), with daytime temperatures ranging from 17 to 25 degrees Celsius and nighttime temperatures ranging from 10 to 15 degrees Celsius. The humidity level is often between 70 and 90%.

The Garden has around 21,000 living specimens representing 2,400 species from hilly areas of eastern Indonesia, including Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Sulawesi, Maluku, and Papua. Furthermore, it has a herbarium with 10,000 preserved plant specimens ranging from algae to blooming plants.

Aside from orchids, ferns, cactus, and carnivorous plants, there is also a traditional Balinese style guesthouse that serves as a guest home for tourists. The conservatory structure also houses one of the world’s largest begonia exhibits.

History

Sukarno, Indonesia’s first president, built the Bali Botanic Garden on July 15, 1959. The Garden was formerly named as the Eka Karya Botanic Garden, where “Eka” means “first” and “Karya” means “creation” in Balinese, alluding to the garden’s history as the first Indonesian botanic garden constructed after independence.

The Bali Botanic Garden was initially meant to specialize in the cultivation of conifer plants (non-flowering seed plants, or Gymnosperms) and to serve as a recreational area. Visitors can participate in scientific, cultural, and recreational events in the garden.

The garden’s construction was halted in 1965 because to political unrest, and it was only reopened on April 30, 1975. When the garden reopened, its area had been increased to 129.2 hectares. It also provided a new capability for ex-situ conservation of plants from eastern Indonesia’s mountainous terrain.

The Garden’s land size was increased to 157.5 hectares in 2001.

Attractions

The garden contains both open recreational spaces and residual mountain rainforest. Carnivorous plants, bamboo garden (87 species), cactus greenhouse (100 species), fern garden (188 species), traditional Balinese medicinal plants (300 species) and ceremonial plants (218 species), Rhododendron garden (>20 species), rose garden, aquatic garden, conservatory, and one of the world’s largest begonia collections (100 species) are among the attractions.[3] On a clear day, you can see Lake Bratan, and one of the most photographed trees in the garden is a massive ficus or fig tree on the higher slope of Tapak Hill.

 

The garden is home to at least 79 bird species, treeshrews are common, and macaques are occasionally observed arriving from the neighboring Batukaru Nature Reserve.

Three Hindu temples may also be reached from the Garden.

The botanical garden receives 350,000 visitors each year, including 10,000 international visitors, as of 2011.

Ulun Danu Beratan, also known as Pura Bratan, is a significant Hindu Shaivite temple on the Indonesian island of Bali. The temple complex is located in the highlands near Bedugul on the banks of Lake Bratan. In the outflow area, the lake’s water feeds the whole region; downstream, there are several smaller water temples that are special to each irrigation association (subak).

The temple complex

Hindu temples are known as “pura” in Bali, and are built as open-air places of worship within walled complexes. The devotee enters the enclosure through a succession of artistically designed gates without doors. The holy pura is designed and planned in a square pattern.According to ancient Lontar scriptures, a typical temple has three courtyards divided by low walls pierced by beautiful entrances. The surrounding courtyard is utilized for secular activities, including tents for gatherings and resting artists and musicians for festivals. During festivals, food vendors are erected up here. The middle courtyard serves as a transition zone between the human and divine parts, and it is here that offerings are made and temple paraphernalia is stored.

Shrines and religious rites are held in the inner courtyard. Merus are square constructions with brick foundation and several pagoda-style thatched roofs; the number of roofs represents the deity’s position and is usually an odd number. Pura Ulun Danu Beratan temple is one of Bali’s nine ‘Kahyangan Jagat’ temples. The temple complex also has five shrines devoted to other Hindu gods.

Due to the importance of Lake Bratan as a primary source of irrigation in central Bali, the temple was built in 1633 and is used for sacrifices and ceremonies related to the Balinese water, lake, and river goddess Dewi Danu. The complex’s 11-story pelinggih meru is devoted to Shiva and his wife Parvathi. This temple also has a statue of Buddha. This temple is also known as the “Bali Temple on the Lake” because it appears to float when the Bratan River rises.

The Buddhist stupa

The Buddhist stupa of Beratan is a Buddhist temple located in the tourist complex of Pura Ulun Danu Beratan. Its presence is highly rare and noteworthy, given its proximity to Hindu places of devotion.
